Outdoor locations in Bhutan

Bhutan is a small country surrounded by the Himalayas, between India and Tibet. Bhutan is the only country that is 72% covered in forests and the world’s only carbon negative country. It is the most unique travel destination in the world! Visiting as an independent traveller is pretty much impossible if you are not an Indian, Maldivian or Bangladeshi citizen. But that should not stop you from visiting this beautiful country. So here are our top 3 outdoor locations in Bhutan.

Paro Taktsang – The Tiger’s Nest Monastery

With its unique location and views of the surrounding majestic mountains and emerald green valleys, visiting the Parrotaksan Temple is an unforgettable experience. The main feature of the monastery is its isolated location. It is only accessible by mountainous trails. The remote location of the monastery makes it a beautiful and unique place to visit.

Buddha Dordenma Statue

On a hill in Thimphu, the capital and the largest city of Bhutan, is a huge golden Buddha sitting on a meditation hall. At first glance it looks like one big Buddha statue, but what many people don’t know, is that they are actually looking at 125,000 Buddhas. Inside the statue there are 125,000 miniature Buddhas ranging from 8 to 12 inches tall.

Punakha Suspension Bridge

The Punakha Suspension Bridge, the second longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, connects the old administrative centre of Punakha Dzongkhag with the rest of the valley. It hangs above the fast Baozhu River and is about 160-180 meters long. This bridge has become the pioneer of modern suspension bridges in the world. The locals cover the bridge with prayer flags because they believe that the flags should always be tied outside the house waving with the wind.
